TAMPA, FL - The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have used one of their four free recalls and recalled forward Karl Stewart from the Admirals, Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced today.
Stewart, a 5-foot-11, 172-pound left wing from Scarborough, Ontario, leads the Admirals with 62 games played. He has scored 14 goals and added 13 assists with 96 penalty minutes in Norfolk this season. He has also scored four power play goals and two shorthanded goals. He ranks fourth on Norfolk in goals and second in penalty minutes. In 282 career AHL games between Norfolk and the Chicago Wolves, Stewart has 62 goals and 71 assists for 133 points and 692 penalty minutes.
Acquired at the 2007 NHL trade deadline, Stewart made his Lightning debut on March 1, 2007 at Washington. He played seven games with Tampa Bay and did not record any points. In 60 career NHL games with the Lightning, Blackhawks, Penguins and Atlanta Thrashers, Stewart has two goals and four assists with 66 penalty minutes.
The 24-year-old played his junior hockey with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League and recorded 64 goals and 151 points in three seasons. He had a junior career high 35 goals and 85 points in his final season.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Atlanta on September 28, 2001, Stewart was acquired by Tampa Bay from Chicago on February 27, 2007 with a sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Nikita Alexeev.
The Admirals return to Scope tonight to face off against the Philadelphia Phantoms. The first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a team trading card set courtesy of Konica Minolta. In addition, TNA Wrestlers "Showtime" Eric Young and "Maple Leaf Muscle" Petey Williams will be on hand to sign autographs on the concourse from 6:15 - 6:45 p.m.
