Lexington Legends News Release
It took more than four and a half hours, but the Lexington Legends came back after trailing 4-0 and 7-4 and beat the Asheville Tourists 8-7 in 15 innings at Applebee's Park Thursday night. Outfielder J.D. Martinez kept the Legends alive with a two-out, game-tying three-run double in the 11th inning and then produced the winning hit, another double, in the 15th.
Asheville broke in front with four runs in the top of the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk, a run-scoring infield out, and a two-run double by Tyler Massey.
The Legends scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make the score 4-2, and tied the game with two runs in the eighth. Miguel Arrendell led off with a double, went to third on a single by Jake Goebbert and scored on Kody Hinze's single. Jonathan Meyer hit a ground ball to shortstop Angelys Nina, who threw to second baseman Avery Barnes to force Hinze, but Barnes' relay to first was wide, allowing Goebbert to score from second with the tying run.
Asheville took a 7-4 lead in the top of the 11th inning. Joe Sanders and Massey started the inning with back-to-back homers. The Tourists added another run on a walk, an infield out, a passed ball and a double by Barnes.
The Legends started their comeback in the bottom of the eleventh with two outs and no one on base. Grant Hogue walked, Jose Altuve singled and pinch hitter Jonathan Fixler walked to load the bases. Martinez drilled a pitch into the gap in left center field, scoring Hogue, Altuve and pinch runner Andy Simunic to tie the game.
The score remained 7-7 until the bottom of the 15th. With two outs and the bases empty, Simunic, who remained in the game at shortstop, lined a single to center. Martinez hit a drive to deep right center field, where center fielder Eliezer Mesa got a glove on the ball, but couldn't hold it, and Simunic came around to score the winning run.
Daniel Sarisky (1-0), the fifth Lexington pitcher, got the win after working the 15th inning. Paul Bargas (0-1), the last of seven Asheville pitchers used in the game, took the loss.
Lexington's Jonathan Meyer went 0-for-5, ending his hitting streak at 14 games.
The Legends, now 9-6, have taken the first three games of the series with Asheville. The fourth and final game is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday at Applebee's Park.
