Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - 17-year old Domingo Santana hit a mammoth solo shot on the first pitch of the bottom of the 14th inning, and the Lakewood BlueClaws defeated the Hagerstown Suns 9-8 Friday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Jacob Diekman (1-0) got the win, throwing two shutout innings in the 13th and 14th. Colton Willems (0-1) gave up two runs in two innings taking the loss.
After blowing a late 7-5 lead last night, the BlueClaws again found themselves up 7-5 through seven innings Friday night. Again they would blow the lead in the top of the ninth.
BlueClaws reliever Jordan Ellis allowed base hits to three of the first four hitters he faced, and an error by shortstop Jonathan Villar let the tying run cross home. Ellis would limit the damage from there on out, but the score was still tied 7-7 heading into extra innings.
In the top of the 12th Chad Poe balked in a run to give Hagerstown an 8-7 lead, but a Jeremy Barnes RBI single would tie the score once again in the bottom half of the inning to keep the BlueClaws alive.
Lakewood would have several chances to end the game, moving the winning runner into scoring position in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth innings before Santana finally brought the four hour, 32 minute epic to an end with one swing of the bat.
Santana finished the evening 1-for-5 with the home run and two walks. Jiwan James went 2-for-6, walking twice and scoring twice. Jeremy Barnes had two hits, four walks, and one RBI.
The BlueClaws struggled with runners in scoring position, going just 3-for-22 and stranding 20 runners.
Lakewood would open the scoring by putting four runs on the board in the first, with two coming on an error after Suns second baseman Francisco Soriano dropped what should have been the third out on a force play at second.
The Suns committed five errors Friday night, and nine total in the past two games combined.
After the BlueClaws big first inning, Hagerstown would answer right back with four runs of their own in the second off of BlueClaws starter Nick Hernandez. The four runs were more than Hernandez had given up in his three previous starts. Hernandez would settle down after that to make it through seven innings, giving up five runs on ten hits.
Suns starter Daniel Rosenbaum pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, but only two were earned.
Two new BlueClaws made their debut Friday. Torre Langley got the start at catcher, and went 2-for-3 with a sac fly RBI in the seventh. He also picked a runner off first in the seventh and threw out Destin Hood trying to steal second in the eighth.
Reliever Ebelin Lugo pitched a scoreless top of the eighth after being picked up at the airport earlier in the day.
