(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Luis Cruz worked six innings to get his ninth win and Brandon Meredith had a three-run double as the Lexington Legends defeated the West Virginia Power 6-3 Wednesday night. The Legends now trail first-place Rome by three and one-half games in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings, and have eight games remaining against the Braves.

Lexington scored first when Justin Gominsky hit a solo home run, his first homer of the season, with two outs in the second inning.

The Legends added another run in the third. Delino DeShields Jr. led off with a single. The hit was his 232nd as a member of the Legends, eclipsing the old career mark of 231 set by Eric Taylor in 2007-08.

DeShields advanced to second on a ground out by Nolan Fontana, stole third, and scored on a balk. The steal was his league-leading 82nd of the season.

Lexington extended its lead to 6-0 with four runs in the fifth. With two outs, DeShields reached on a bunt single and moved to third when Fontana followed with a single to left. Fontana advanced to second on the throw to third. Zach Johnson then singled to right for his league-leading 101st RBI, plating DeShields and moving Fontana to third. Matt Duffy was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, and Meredith drove in all three runners with a double to right field.

The Power came back with three runs in the sixth. With two out, Gregory Polanco was hit by a pitch. Willy Garcia followed with a single, and Dan Gamache walked to load the bases. Chris Lashmet then rifled a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and cutting the Lexington lead to 6-3. Francisco Diaz singled to left, but Lashmet was thrown out at home plate by left fielder Jordan Scott to end the inning.

The Lexington bullpen duo of Evan Grills and Dayan Diaz shut out the Power the rest of the way.

Cruz (9-5) allowed three runs and seven hits over his six innings, striking out five. Diaz retired the side in the ninth to pick up his 18th save of the season.

West Virginia starter Zack Von Rosenberg (3-5) was handed the loss after allowing six runs over five innings.

The Legends and Power play game two of a four-game series Thursday night. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
