Lexington Legends News Release
(GREENVILLE, S.C.) A two-run single by Wander Franco broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, and the Lexington Legends went on to a 5-3 win over the Greenville Drive Tuesday night. The Legends have taken the first two games in the three-game series.
Humberto Arteaga drew a walk to lead off the eighth inning. Ryan O'Hearn and Elier Hernandez both struck out, but Samir Duenez hit a ground-rule double to center field, sending Arteaga to third. Franco followed with a ground single to center field, scoring both
Arteaga and Duenez and giving the Legends their final margin.
Lexington took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning on a solo homer by O'Hearn, his second home run in two games. The Drive tied it on a homer by Nick Longhi in the bottom of the second.
The Legends broke the tie in the fifth. Chad Johnson led off with a single and stole second base. Corey Toups followed with his first home run of the year, putting the Legends in front 3-1.
The Drive rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Procyshen drew a leadoff walk. He moved to third on a single by Rafael Devers, who took second on a throwing error by Hernandez, the right fielder. Carlos Mesa drove in both runners with a base hit to center field, setting up the tie-breaking rally by Lexington in the eighth.
Pedro Fernandez (1-0) got the win in relief. He entered the game in the sixth inning after starter Torey Deshazier had worked the first five. Deshazier allowed two hits and one run. He struck out five batters and walked none. Fernandez gave up two hits and two runs, one earned, over the final four innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Jerez Williams, (0-1), who relieved starter Ty Buttrey in the seventh inning, took the loss.
The Legends will try for a three-game sweep Wednesday night in Greenville. The home opener is set for Thursday night against West Virginia at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
