Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The floodgates opened in more than one way against the Hickory Crawdads Tuesday night, as a scoreless pitchers' duel disappeared with a 7th inning grand slam by the visiting Asheville Tourists before a downpour of rain ended the game in the top of the 9th resulting in a 7-0 'Dads defeat at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Hickory and Asheville began the 7th frame in a 0-0 tie thanks to the great starting pitching by Kelvin Vasquez for the 'Dads and Zach Jemiola for the Tourists. Vasquez exited the game after tossing five shutout innings on two hits, one walk, and 5 strikeouts. Jemiola lasted one inning longer, pitching six scoreless on two hits and 3 Ks.
The Crawdads turned to reliever Adam Parks in the 6th, with the 6'3" right-hander picking up right where Vasquez left off by striking out two in a perfect inning. The 7th began in much the same way as Parks fanned the leadoff hitter for the first out. Asheville first baseman Henry Garcia followed with a walk, which was accompanied by consecutive singles from Randy Reyes and Sean Dwyer to load the bases with one out for Tourists second baseman Forrest Wall. Two pitches into the at-bat, Wall lofted a ball over the right field fence for a grand slam and a 4-0 Tourists lead.
The top of the 9th began with the 'Dads brining in relief pitcher Chris Dula from the bullpen while the rain began to fall at the ballpark. Dula struggled against the Tourists and the elements, with Asheville plating three runs, one earned, on two walks, a hit batter, and a throwing error by Dula himself to push the score to 7-0. Hickory went to the pen again and brought in closer John Fasola, but one pitch into his outing the tarp was pulled and the game was suspended. Following a 30-minute delay the contest was called, giving the Crawdads a 7-0 defeat one day after they blanked the Tourists by the same score.
Jemiola (2-0) earned the win for Asheville, while Parks (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Hickory.
The Crawdads (4-2) and Tourists (4-2) will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday, with the day game rubber match scheduled for 11:00 am.
