Lexington Legends News Release
Lexington's Mike Foltynewicz recorded his first professional win in a 4-2 victory over West Virginia in game one of a doubleheader, but the Power took game two, 9-3. Both games were seven innings in length, the standard for South Atlantic League doubleheaders.
Foltynewicz (1-6), Houston's first round pick and the 19th overall in the 2010 draft, outdueled Jameson Taillon (1-1), the first round choice by Pittsburgh in 2010 and the second overall pick. Foltynewicz took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He exited the game after allowing two walks and a single in the sixth. In five plus innings, he allowed two runs on one hit and struck out five.
Adam Bailey homered to give the Legends a 1-0 lead in the first.
Lexington added two runs in the second. After a single by Mike Kvasnicka and a double by Enrique Hernandez, Tyler Burnett grounded out to first, scoring Kvasnicka. Roberto Pena hit a ground ball to third baseman Eric Avila, whose error on the throw home allowed Hernandez to score, giving the Legends a 3-0 lead. The Legends added a run in the fourth when Emilio King singled home Burnett, who had singled, stolen second and moved to third on an infield out.
In the sixth, Foltynewicz walked the first two batters, and then allowed the Power's only hit of the game, a single by Drew Maggi. After Foltynewicz was relieved by Jorge DeLeon with the bases loaded, one run scored on a force at second base, and a second run came home when shortstop Jiovanni Mier's relay went past first base for an error as he tried to complete a double play.
The Legends' Alex Sogard pitched a one-two-three seventh to pick up his third save.
West Virginia jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two on a three-run home run by Matt Curry and a two-run shot by Rogelio Noris. The Power added three runs on four hits in the third inning, and Dan Grovatt hit a solo shot in the fourth to make the score 9-0. The Legends got on the board with Bailey's solo home run in the fourth, his second of the doubleheader.
In the sixth, the Legends added two more. Delino DeShields Jr. doubled, Hernandez singled, and Bailey walked to load the bases. Chris Wallace drove DeShields home with a sacrifice fly to right. Hernandez scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Burnett.
Kevin Decker (1-1) picked up the win in relief, and Lexington starter Brian Streilein (3-1) was handed the loss. The Legends and Power will play the rubber match of the three-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
