
'Dads Blank 'Hoppers to Split Doubleheader

HICKORY, NC - After the Hickory Crawdads fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 3-2, in the first seven-inning game of Wednesday's doubleheader, the 'Dads bounced back with a 5-0 shutout win in Game 2, before 444 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. RF Josh Richmond belted two homers in the second game, as RHP Matt Thompson dealt 6.1 scoreless innings in the start.
Game 1:
After Greensboro (21-17) got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the 'Dads responded right away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second against RHP Jay Rogers (W, 2-3). 1B Andrew Clark led off the frame with a single, moving to third on a double by 2B Odubel Herrera one out later. CF Jake Skole plated Clark from third with an RBI single, also advancing Herrera to third base. He then scored on a fielding error later in the inning, putting Hickory in front, 2-1.
The Grasshoppers (22-16) tied it up with a solo homer by CF Isaac Galloway against RHP Justin Grimm (L, 2-1) in the third, and then struck again with an RBI single by SS Daniel Black in the fourth to take the 3-2 lead. Greensboro RHP Jordan Conley and RHP Michael Brady (S, 3) both dealt a scoreless relief inning to close the win for the Grasshoppers.
Game 2:
The Crawdads (22-17) responded with their second shutout win of the season in Game 2 of the doubleheader. RF Josh Richmond broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run against RHP Robert Morey (L, 3-4) in the second and was immediately followed by a triple from 2B Odubel Herrera. Herrera then scored on a wild pitch, putting Hickory in front, 2-0.
The 'Dads added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with another tally against Greensboro (22-17). Richmond reached on a fielder's choice, putting one on with one out. Richmond advanced to second on a ground out, before scoring on an RBI single by LF Jake Skole, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Richmond and the Crawdads continued to swing away in the fifth. DH Tomas Telis singled himself on with one out and Richmond brought him home with his second homer of the game, accounting for the 5-0 eventual final score.
RHP Matt Thompson (W, 1-2) earned the win with 6.1 shutout innings, striking out seven and only scattering four hits with two walks. RHP Colby Killian came in with one out in the seventh and struck out the final two batters of the game to close the 5-0 shutout win for Hickory.
Crawdads Clippings:
The Crawdads close the series against Greensboro with Thirsty Thursday, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, featuring $1 Can Beers and Pepsis. There will also be a post-game concert by the Jacob Johnson Band. First Pitch is 7 p.m., gates open at 6 p.m.
