Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends are joining with the city of Lexington in the "Play Ball" initiative, designed to strengthen the connection between baseball and American communities. More than 130 communities across the country are participating in Play Ball, which is supported by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball.
Mayor Jim Gray, Legends President/CEO Andy Shea, former major league players Doug Flynn, Austin Kearns and Jeff Parrett, youth baseball players and coaches, and officials from the Bluegrass Sports Commission and Lexington Parks and Recreation attended the announcement of Lexington's involvement at a news conference Monday at Kirklevington Park.
"Lexington is a terrific city for baseball and softball at all levels of the game," Mayor Gray said. "Whether it's tossing a ball around in the backyard or playing in one of our many organized leagues, the sport of baseball has a positive effect on our community. It's a way to stay active, work as a team and grow friendships. From age 3 to 103, there's a way to play ball in Lexington."
As part of the Play Ball program, the Legends will hold an event for families and children at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, Saturday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Kids will have the opportunity to join Legends players on the field for baseball instruction and contests. The Legends will play the Hagerstown Suns that day at 1:35 p.m.
"The Play Ball initiative is not only a great celebration of baseball and softball, but a celebration of being active," said Shea. "The summer time is synonymous with baseball and softball and we are thrilled to be honoring the sport, former major leaguers, current major leagues, and future major leaguers that call Lexington home."
