CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds played evenly with West Virginia to start, but Monday night's game switched with a seven-run sixth inning. Batting around in the sixth, the Power coasted to an 11-2 victory in the series opener at Appalachian Power Park.

Michael Suchy shined for West Virginia, beginning with a two-out RBI double in the first inning. Delmarva took a lead in the second inning with a big fly from Derek Peterson. After a single by Logan Uxa, Peterson drilled a two-run shot to left field, his third home run of the year, for a 2-1 lead. However, the Shorebirds missed a golden opportunity to pad their advantage, stranding the bases loaded in the second.

West Virginia chipped away at Shorebirds' starter John Means to overtake the Shorebirds' lead. In the fourth, Suchy hit a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2. In the fifth, Means battled through rainy conditions, issuing a two-out walk followed by a go-ahead RBI single by Pablo Reyes.

The game slipped away from Delmarva in the sixth inning. Against Ivan Hernandez, West Virginia batted around for seven runs on six hits and two walks. Taylor Gushue hit a bases-clearing double, and Jordan Luplow added another two-run double in the rally. Gushue hit a solo home run in the seventh to cap the scoring at 11-2 in the Power's favor.

Yeudy Garcia earned the win for West Virginia, improving to 11-5 on the same day he was named South Atlantic League Player of the Month for July. John Means fell to 8-8 with the loss, allowing three runs on just three hits.

Delmarva will try to snap their six-game losing streak on Tuesday. Dariel Delgado (4-3, 3.55) will start the middle game of the series opposite right-hander Alex McRae (5-8, 5.07). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park.
