
Power Tops Delmarva 11-2

(Charleston, W.V. - August 10, 2015) - The West Virginia Power opened up the three-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds with an 11-2 win on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. Kevin Newman scored the go-ahead run his South Atlantic League debut and added his first career hit with the Power as part of a seven-run sixth inning.
The Power scored a run in the first inning. Pablo Reyes drew a one-out walk and scored two batters later on a two-out double by Michael Suchy.
Delmarva took the lead in the top of the second. Logan Uxa led off the second with a single and scored when Derek Peterson hit a two-run home run to left.
In the fourth tied the game and took the lead in the fifth. Suchy led off the fourth with a solo home run to left. In the fifth, Kevin Newman drew a two-out walk, reached second on a wild pitch, and crossed on Reyes' RBI single to center field.
Leading 3-2, the Power used a seven-run sixth inning to break away from the Shorebirds. With the bases loaded, Taylor Gushue ripped a first-pitch double down the right field line to give West Virginia a 6-2 lead. Newman followed with a two-out single to right to put runners on the corners. Reyes singled to left to plate Gushue and gave West Virginia a 7-2 lead. Jordan Luplow pulled two-run double to make it 9-2 and later scored on a wild pitch to cap the seven-run inning.
West Virginia added its final run of the game in the eighth inning. Gushue collected his fourth RBI of the night to give the Power an 11-2 advantage.
Yeudy Garcia (11-5) earned the win with five innings of two-hit ball. The right hander surrendered two runs and struck out four. John Means (8-8) suffered the loss after he gave up three runs over five innings. Edgar Santana made his SAL debut and tossed two shutout innings in relief of Garcia.
West Virginia (30-14, 67-46) continues the series against Delmarva (22-22, 55-57) on Tuesday night. The Power will toss right hander Alex McRae (5-8, 5.07) against Shorebirds right handed pitcher Dariel Delgado (4-3, 3.55). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490, the Power website, and the TuneIn Radio App is slated for 6:45 p.m.
Tuesday's game is Purple Power Night at Appalachian Power Park with select jerseys to be auctioned off after the game to benefit pancreatic cancer research through PANCAN. Tuesday's game is also a Tailgate Tuesday presented by Tailgate 107.3 with $2 16 oz. drafts for the entire night and happy hour specials from 6 p.m. to first pitch.
