THE LEADOFF: West Virginia beat Asheville 8-2 Sunday afternoon to earn a series split in a battle of first place clubs. Chase Simpson hit a two run home run in the second inning to stake the Power to the early lead, which they would not relinquish. West Virginia led 3-2 after four and added insurance runs in the sixth, seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to seal the victory. Stephen Tarpley matched his season-best with seven innings and struck out a season-high nine batters while earning his ninth win of the year. The Power tagged Helmis Rodriguez with the loss after the Tourists starter allowed three runs on one hit and seven walks. Jordan Luplow hit his tenth home run of the season and Pablo Reyes had his second three-hit game of the series to help lead the offense.

TUCKER'ED OUT: Cole Tucker was placed on the Power Disabled List Sunday with shoulder fatigue. The 19-year-old has not played since July 28. Tucker has the Power's second best batting average this season at .293 over 73 games. The switch hitter stole 25 bases and hit two home runs with 25 runs batted in during that span.

WV TO WV: The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted Kevin Newman and Edgar Santana to the Power roster from the Black Bears. Newman, the 19th overall selection in the 2015 draft, was batting .226 in the New York-Penn League with two home runs and nine runs batted in while starting 38 games at shortstop. Santana appeared in 14 games for the Black Bears, going 1-0 with a save and sported a 2.70 ERA. Santana was signed in 2013 and was pitching in the Dominican Summer League last season.

BIRDS ARE BACK IN TOWN: West Virginia leads the all-time series against Delmarva 69-62 heading into play tonight, including a 44-31 record at Appalachian Power Park against the Shorebirds.

DOG DAYS: The Power hit .338 during the Asheville series and have a .311 team batting average this month. The pitching staff, however, has seen its ERA rise from 3.29 to 3.45 over the nine games so far this month, where West Virginia is 5-4.

TARPLEY SHINES: Stephen Tarpley is now 6-0 in the second half and lowered his earned run average to 1.94 since the All-Star break. Sunday's win also kept the left-hander perfect on the road with a 6-0 mark and a 1.55 ERA. He was acquired along with pitcher Steven Brault (now with Double-A Altoona) in January for outfielder Travis Snyder. The duo are a combined 19-6 this year with a combined 2.68 ERA. Snider was designated for assignment on August 7.

LAUNCH-A-BALL: Jordan Luplow, Pablo Reyes and Chase Simpson all hit home runs during the Asheville series and are each now in double figures. The 2014 edition of the Power had one player reach double figures (JaCoby Jones- 23). The 2009 club had more double-digit home run hitters than any other team in franchise history with seven.

STREAKING CONTINUES: Jordan Luplow's eighth inning home run extended his hitting streak to eight straight. The third baseman has a .406 average since August 2. Francisco Diaz has now hit safely in six straight and Pablo Reyes has a six game hitting streak and a ten game on-base streak entering play tonight.
