The Charleston RiverDogs opened a 4-1 lead after three innings and then held on for a 4-3 win over the Lexington Legends in Charleston Saturday night.

After each team scored a run in the first inning, Charleston moved on top 3-1 in the bottom of the second against Lexington starter Kyle Greenwalt (L, 2-4) when Melky Mesa doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Pirela. Mike Lyon was then hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by Chase Weems and scored on a wild pitch.

The RiverDogs made it 4-1 in the third inning, when Corban Joseph doubled to right field, went to third on an infield out and scored on a wild pitch.

The Legends closed the gap to one in the fourth. Phil Disher walked to lead off, and Brandon Barnes singled him to second. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Pedro Gonzalez' two-out single to left brought home two runs to leave the score at 4-3.

Charleston starter Brett Marshall (W, 2-3), who worked into the seventh inning, and relievers Casey Erickson and Pat Venditte held the Legends in check the rest of the way. Venditte, the only ambidextrous pitcher in professional baseball, recorded a scoreless ninth inning to earn his league-leading twelfth save. He pitched left-handed to two hitters and right-handed to two others, giving up a single to Marques Williams.

Williams, who entered the game in the fourth inning as a pinch hitter, was two-for-two and also walked. He has had six hits in his last six official at-bats, including a four-for-four game Friday night.

Roster change: Left-handed pitcher Kirkland Rivers joined the Legends Saturday from extended spring training. Right-hander Jose Trinidad went on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Rivers will wear uniform number 19.
