Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Intimidators were one out away from victory on Sunday afternoon, only to see the win snatched away on a bad-hop groundball in a 2-1 loss to the Shorebirds at Perdue Stadium.

Three straight runners reached base with two outs against Dan Remenowksy (2-3), including Elvin Polanco, who singled in Ron Welty and Joe Mahoney to give the Shorebirds a walkoff win. Polanco hit a routine groundball to second, but it hit off the lip of the infield grass and shot through Drew Garcia to allow two runs to score. The ball beat Mahoney to the plate, but the Delmarva first baseman crashed into catcher Zach Larson and jarred the ball loose for the winning run.

Kannapolis took a 1-0 lead to the bottom of the ninth on the back of a career performance for Stephen Sauer. Sauer went seven innings without allowing a run. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up just three hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

The trouble for Sauer is that the Delmarva staff was nearly as good. Oliver Drake made the start for the Shorebirds (22-18) and did not surrender a run in 5 2/3 innings.

Kannapolis (20-23) did finally tally against reliever Patrick Egan, when Eduardo Escobar placed a two-out bunt hit to score John Curtis. Curtis doubled twice and walked while making his first start of the year at designated hitter.

Brandon Cooney (1-2) took the win by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

Kannapolis has now matched a season-high, losing four games in a row. Delmarva has won five straight games since ending an eight-game losing streak.
