Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - C Doug Hogan slammed a three-run home run and an RBI triple to help lead the Hickory Crawdads to an 8-6 win against the Hagerstown Suns before 2,005 fans at Municipal Stadium on Sunday evening. The win is Hickory's second in a row, as they look to take the series Monday afternoon in the finale in Hagerstown.
The Suns (20-20) struck first with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the first for the early 2-0 lead. Both runs came in on bases loaded walks issued by starter RHP Wilmer Font, who celebrated his 19th birthday today with a no-decision. However, Font was able to retire the side with three strikeouts to get out of the inning with minimal damage done, after the Suns had loaded the bases with no one out to start the inning.
Hickory (22-21) started battling back right away, getting on the board with a run in the top of the second. RF Mike Bianucci was hit by a pitch to start the inning, advanced to second on a bunt single by 1B Erik Morrison, and came in on a single by 3B Matt West.
The Crawdads then poured it on with five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Morrison started the rally with an infield single and quickly advanced to third on a double hit by West. Hogan then brought both runners in with a towering three-run homer hit well over the left field wall to put Hickory ahead 4-2. DH Eric Fry came up next and hit a double to right-center, before scoring on an RBI singe by SS Leury Garcia, who has hit safely in each of the four games he's played in this year. Garcia later came in on an RBI single by 2B Jake Kaase, capping the big inning and putting Hickory ahead by four runs.
After Hagerstown scored two in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Tyler Tufts (2-0, 2.28), the Crawdads came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pull back ahead by four. Bianucci led off the inning with his sixth homer of the year, tying Hogan again for the team lead. Morrison then doubled to left field, and scored on a Hogan RBI triple blasted off the left field wall for his fourth RBI on the game and 20th on the season to make it 8-4.
Hagerstown again pulled within two runs of the Crawdads with one earned and one unearned run against RHP Cody Eppley in the bottom of the eighth. However, Eppley came back on the mound for the bottom of the ninth and nailed down the 8-6 win for the Crawdads, registering his first save of the season, as Tufts earned the win. On the other side, RHP Brad Peacock (0-4, 4.50) was tagged with the loss for the Suns.
