Lexington Legends News Release

Brian Pellegrini's three-run homer capped a four-run first inning for Lexington, and the Legends made the lead stand up as they went on to beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-2 in the opener of a four-game series at Grayson Stadium in Savannah. The homer over the left field fence was Pellegrini's third in eight games with the Legends in 2009. He led the team in homers in 2008 with 21.

Savannah scored a run in the second off Lexington starter Jordan Lyles (W, 2-4). Eric Campbell doubled and scored from second on an infield hit by Juan Lagares to make the score 4-1. It was the only run allowed by Lyles, who pitched six innings and allowed four hits while striking out four and walking one.

Lexington pushed the lead back to four in the seventh. Marques Williams and Ronnie Ramirez singled, and after Williams was thrown out at third on the front end of a double steal attempt, Jay Austin singled to right to drive in Ramirez from second.

The Sand Gnats scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh when Wilmer Flores reached second on an error and scored on a single by Lagares.

Arcenio Leon, Ashton Mowdy and new addition Kirkland Rivers worked through the seventh and eighth for Lexington, and Patrick Urckfitz retired the Sand Gnats in order in the ninth to earn his third save in as many opportunities.

Jay Austin had three hits and scored a run, and Ramirez contributed two of Lexington's 10 hits.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. game Monday. Left-hander Brad Dydalewicz (2-0) will pitch for the Legends against right-hander Elvin Ramirez (2-2).
