The Charleston RiverDogs scored three times in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to beat the Lexington Legends 5-2 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night in Charleston. Starters Tanner Bushue of Lexington and Shaeffer Hall of Charleston were dominating as the game remained scoreless through six innings.

Bushue, an 18-year-old right-hander and a second-round draft choice by Houston in June 2009, pitched four and one-third innings in his Legends' debut. He struck out six, walked one and did not allow a hit until Rob Lyerly doubled with one out in the fifth inning. Bushue was then relieved by Jose Trinidad.

Hall was equally effective. He allowed three hits and no runs in six innings while striking out four and walking none.

The Legends broke through in the seventh against reliever Ronny Marte. Miguel Arrendell led off with a single and then stole second. After Jiovanni Mier was called out on strikes, J.D. Martinez grounded to shortstop, but Kelvin Castro's throw to first was low, and his error allowed Arrendell to score the game's first run. Martinez advanced to second on the play. Jonathan Meyer followed with a single to score Martinez, giving Lexington a 2-0 lead.

The RiverDogs bounced back quickly. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, consecutive singles by Zoilo Almonte, Luke Murton and Lyerly scored one run. After Kirk Clark relieved Trinidad, a wild pitch moved Murton to third and Lyerly to second. Murton then scored the tying run on a passed ball charged to catcher Jonathan Fixler, and Taylor Grote followed with a base hit to put the RiverDogs in front for good.

Charleston added two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by Lyerly.

Marte (1-0) got the win. Trinidad (0-1) took the loss. The two teams continue the series in Charleston Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
