GreenJackets Lead Through Five in Suspended Opener

Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets and Greensboro Grasshoppers showed up ready to play on Opening Night. The only problem? No one told the grounds crew in Greensboro.
The GreenJackets 2010 season opener was suspended in the top of the fifth inning with the GreenJackets leading 2-0 due to heavy winds, persistent rains and the inability to cover the field as a result of those poor conditions.
Tommy Joseph's RBI single in his first professional at-bat keyed a two-run first inning. The frame was aided by two Grasshoppers errors and a wild pitch that scored Ryan Lollis from third for the game's second run.
The other story of the night was the debut of Chris Heston, who fired four innings of one-hit baseball, retiring the game's first ten hitters and striking out four.
After winds picked up in the fifth, the umpires sent the players off the field and called for the tarp. Trouble was, the undermanned grounds crew was no match for the combination of rain and heavy winds. As a result, the grounds crew was not able to cover the infield, leaving it exposed to the conditions and forcing an early end to Thursday's play.
The game will resume with Evan Crawford at the plate for Augusta with a 2-1 count and one out in the top of the fifth. Tonight's game will resume at 5:35 p.m. on Friday and will be played to a full nine-inning completion. After a 30-minute break, the Jackets and Hoppers will play a seven-inning game - Friday night's regularly scheduled affair.
Friday's action will be broadcast online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com with the pregame show beginning at 5:20 p.m. Immediately following the Atlanta Braves game airing on WRDW-AM 1630, fans will be able to hear the conclusion of Friday's twi-night doubleheader.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
