
Shorebirds Fall 5-4 to Greenville on Opening Night

Greenville, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds rallied in the ninth inning but came up short in a 5-4 loss to the Greenville Drive on Opening Night at Fluor Field at the West End. Brian Conley paced the Shorebirds offensive attack with a career best four hits.
The Shorebirds were first to strike in the second inning. Brian Conley hit a one out flare single to left field. Two batters later, Justin Dalles cranked a single off the top part of the left field wall to score Conley from first and give the âBirds a 1-0 lead.
Greenville answered with a run in the fourth inning. Three infield singles plated Michael Almanzar to tie the game at 1-1.
The Shorebirds regained the lead in the fifth inning. Tyler Kelly set the table with a one out single. Levi Carolus followed with a lined single to left field. With Tyler Kolodny batting, relief pitcher Pete Ruiz tossed a wild pitch to score Kelly from third and give the Shorebirds a 2-1 edge.
Shorebirds starter Ryan Berry was excellent in five innings of work. He surrendered just five hits and an earned run. The former Rice University star struck out four and did not issue a walk.
The Drive grabbed control of the game in sixth inning. Nine batters came to the plate and three runs scored on four hits to give the Drive a 4-2 advantage.
The âBirds inched to within a run in the eighth inning. Kolodny ignited the charge with a triple to right center field. He came into score on Mikey Planeta ground out to second base to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Drive added a run in the bottom of the eighth to build a 5-3 lead heading into the ninth.
T.J. Baxter hit a one single to left center field in the ninth. Tyler Kelly followed with a single into right field to plate Baxter, which pushed the Shorebirds within a run. With two outs, Tyler Kolodny blistered a double off the left field wall to advance Kelly to third. Then, Dennis Neuman got Planeta to bounce out to short to end the game.
The Shorebirds are back in action on Friday, April 17 against the Greenville Drive at 7:00 p.m. RHP Jake Cowan will make his first start of the season against LHP Drake Britton.
