Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The rainy weather just couldn't hold off long enough for the Crawdads to mount a comeback, dropping the Opening Night game in Hagerstown to the Suns, 1-0 in five-and-one-half innings of play.
Hickory (0-1) got the hits started in the first, when SS Leury Garcia reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher, Daniel Rosenbaum (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Garcia would promptly steal second, and C Vinny DiFazio grounded a single to third; but LF Christian Santana grounded into an inning-ending double-play to end the potential rally.
The Suns (1-0) also, picked up a pair of hits in their half of the first to push across the lone run of the game. 2B Francisco Soriano laced a double to center, and was driven in on a double from 3B Steven Souza hit to left.
Joseph Wieland (0-1, 1.80 ERA) pitched well in his five innings of work, recording two strikeouts and a walk, while allowing just one run (earned) on five hits.
The game was called after five-and-one-half innings due to rain, after having postponed the start of the game by approximately 20 minutes due to earlier showers in the night.
