Lexington Legends News Release
(GREENSBORO, N.C.) The Lexington Legends erased an early six-run deficit and came back to beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 11-8 Thursday night.
Greensboro jumped in front with three runs in the first inning. Brent Keys reached second on an error by right fielder Justin Gominsky. Austin Barnes, who had four hits in the game, singled, scoring Keys. Aaron Senne followed with his fifth home run of the year and Greensboro led 3-0.
The Legends got one run back in the second inning on a double by Brandon Meredith and a triple by Chan Jong Moon, but Greensboro extended its lead with four more runs in the bottom of the second.
With one out, Ryan Goetz tripled and scored on a single by Keys. Keys stole second and stayed there as Barnes beat out an infield hit. After Senne's single scored Keys, Josh Adams singled, loading the bases.
James Wooster struck out for the second out, but Matt Smith's infield popup was allowed to fall untouched behind the mound, and two more runs scored to give Greensboro a 7-1 margin.
The Legends began their comeback in the fifth inning. Delino DeShields Jr. was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored when catcher Wilfredo Gimenez' throw went into left field. Zach Johnson walked and with two outs, Jay Austin, who was four-for-five in the game, singled, sending Johnson to second. Meredith followed with a single, scoring Johnson to cut the Greensboro lead to four at 7-3.
The game turned in the top of the sixth when the Legends exploded for six runs. With one out, Moon walked and DeShields singled. Both came home on Jordan Scott's double, leaving the score at 7-5. Johnson's single sent Scott to third, and Austin's double to right center scored both runners to tie the game at 7-7. Meredith's single scored Austin, putting the Legends in front 8-7. Meredith advanced to second on the throw home, and scored on Roberto Pena's base hit, making the score 9-7.
Greensboro made it a 9-8 game in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Keys and a double by Barnes, but the Legends added two more in the ninth on Matt Duffy's bases-loaded double.
Evan Grills (3-1), who worked into the sixth inning after relieving starter Jonas Dufek in the second, picked up the victory. Greensboro reliever Johnny Omahen (1-4) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends will open a five-game series against the Asheville Tourists Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
