Late Innings Doom Shorebirds in 5-4 Defeat

Salisbury, Md. - After giving up a two-run home run to Hendry Jimenez the Delmarva Shorebirds (28-48, 0-7) trailed the Hagerstown Suns (48-29, 6-2) 5-4 and were never able to bounce back dropping their tenth game in a row.

Both teams squandered opportunities to score in the first inning. The Shorebirds offense put three runs on the board in the second inning. After two quick groundouts, Gabriel Lino walked and advanced to third on a two-out double by Austin Knight. Lino scored on a wild pitch off the arm of southpaw Bobby Hanson, Jr. Following back-to-back walks by Mychal Givens and Glynn Davis, Sammie Starr was hit by a pitch that brought in the second run of the ball game for Delmarva. Givens scored on a grounder up the middle by Jason Esposito that gave the Shorebirds a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Suns attack began in the third inning with a one-out RBI double off the bat of Cutter Dykstra. The Suns were able to put another run across the board after an RBI fielder's choice by Caleb Ramsey.

The Shorebirds scratched another run across the board on the legs of Mychal Givens who stole back-to-back bases and his third of the game. He scored on a two-out single by Sammie Starr.

Delmarva's starter Eduardo Rodriguez went six innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits. His record drops to 2-4 on the season.

The sixth inning of the ball game proved to be the turning point for Hagerstown. Caleb Ramsey led off the sixth inning with a double. Matt Skole advanced Ramsey to third on a groundout to second. Steven Souza, Jr. knocked him in with a sacrifice fly and a close play at the plate after a great throw from Mikey Planeta. Following the close play at the plate, Justin Miller doubled and Hendry Jimenez hit a two-run home run to left-field to put the Suns up 5-4.

Hagerstown never looked back after that point and completed the four game sweep of the Shorebirds.

Suns lefty Bobby Hanson, Jr. only gave up four earned runs after five and a third innings despite five walks. He notched his second consecutive win to boost his record to 2-0.

Christian Meza and Aaron Barrett combined to give up three hits in their three and two-thirds innings of work.

Shorebirds reliever Zach Fowler pitched three scoreless innings to extend his scoreless inning streak to 22 innings. Fowler yielded just one hit over three innings and retired the final six batters he faced.

The Shorebirds begin a five game series against the West Virginia Power starting Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The scheduled starter for Delmarva is Miguel Chalas (6-3, 4.95).
