Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets had to work overtime to take three of four from the Asheville Tourists, playing their longest game of the year by time and innings with a 6-5 win in 12 innings. The GreenJackets have won six of eight to start the second half with five of those wins coming in one-run games.

In the 12th, the GreenJackets got a one-out single from Elliott Blair to put the winning run aboard for the second time in extra innings. Blair stole second and was headed to third on a Jose Flores two-hopper up the middle. Asheville shortstop Joey Wong made a diving stop up the middle to prevent the Flores grounder from getting into the outfield, but his throw to first couldn't be handled cleanly and kicked away from first baseman Jordan Ribera. That allowed Blair to score the winning run and give the GreenJackets their fourth extra-inning win of the year and their league-leading 20th one-run win of the season.

The GreenJackets broke the ice in the second inning with Joe Staley's two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Augusta has now won all six games in the second half where they've led first. Asheville led for much of the night though, rallying to score twice off Augusta starter Chris Marlowe in the fourth. After Marlowe got the first two outs of the inning pretty quickly, he walked five straight hitters. A bases-loaded walk tied the game while a wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run.

Asheville took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a Brian Humphries RBI single. Shawn Payne drove home a run in the bottom of the inning to pull to within a run, but the Tourists struck back to take a 5-2 lead in the seventh on a two-out, two-run double by Jose Rivera in an inning that was extended by an Augusta error.

In the seventh, the GreenJackets sent eight men to the plate to score three times and tie the game against tiring Tourists starter Alex Gillingham. With runners at the corners, Joe Staley beat out a double play ball to bring home a run. Later in the inning, Kelby Tomlinson drove home another run with an RBI single. Jose Flores stepped up and tied things at five on a sacrifice fly to the left field corner. The GreenJackets left men at second and third though and didn't get another runner on base until extra innings.

Cody Hall (2-0) got the win for the GreenJackets, striking out five in two scoreless innings of one-hit relief. As a team, five GreenJackets pitchers combined to strike out 18 Asheville hitters. Russell Brewer (1-2) took the loss for the Tourists after allowing an unearned run in the 12th.

The GreenJackets are now 4-2 in extra-inning games this year and will welcome the Savannah Sand Gnats to town on Friday for the first of a five-game series. Kyle Crick (3-4, 2.79) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the series opener. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
