Lexington Legends News Release
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) -- West Virginia Power shortstop Brent Brewer drove in five runs and the Power defeated the Lexington Legends 8-2. The Legends failed to convert the positive momentum from their 4-2 road trip into a home win, falling to 1-8 at home on the season.
Brewer, who committed to Florida State to play wide receiver before signing with the Brewers as their second round pick in the 2006 draft, started the scoring for West Virginia in the second inning with his bases loaded triple. Brewer's triple scored Curt Rindal who had walked, John Alonso who had singled, and Lee Haydel who had walked.
The Power added three more runs in the fourth off Lexington reliever Robert Leonhardt. David Fonseca led off the inning with a single and Lee Haydel reached on an error from Lexington first baseman Eric Taylor. Brewer then doubled Fonseca and Haydel home. Brewer advanced to third when Lexington second baseman Matt Cusick overthrew catcher Jonathan Fixler on his relay throw to the plate. Brewer scored on Jonathan LeCroy's sacrifice fly.
Lexington struck back for two runs in the bottom of the fourth in what could be described as an adventurous inning for West Virginia left fielder Scott Houin. Steve Brown appeared to fly out to left when Houin retreated to the warning track to field the ball. To Houin's surprise the ball landed in shallow left field, several dozen yards in front of him.
Brown scored when Fixler hit his own fly ball to left. Houin this time made no effort to disguise his surprise, holding his arms out as the ball landed several feet to his right. Brewer, who had tracked the ball into left, fielded the ball, threw to third baseman Zelous Wheeler who gunned Eric Taylor out at home. Fixler then scored on Nick Moresi's single to center.
West Virginia added single runs in the seventh and eighth. Houin scored on a throwing error from shortstop Ronald Ramirez in the seventh, and Haydel scored on a bases-loaded walk from Legends reliever Fernando Abad in the eighth.
Lexington committed five errors on the night, including two from Ramirez. Ramirez now has nine errors on the young season. Lexington reliever Jay Pacella was the only Legend to hold the Power scoreless as West Virginia plated three runs against both Sergio Severino and Leonhardt and two runs against Abad. Lexington pitchers did strike out 13 Power batters in the game.
The two teams will meet Wednesday night for the second game of the series at 7:05. Lexington will start Colt Adams against R. J. Seidel for West Virginia.
