Legends Blank Sand Gnats 4-0 Behind Mills

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) Alec Mills pitched seven shutout innings, and with relief help from Matt Murray in the eighth inning and Clayton Schulz in the ninth, the Lexington Legends blanked the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-0 Wednesday night.

Mills, named Monday to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team, struck out six batters and walked none. He allowed seven hits. In two starts since moving to the rotation from the bullpen, Mills has pitched 13 scoreless innings.

The Legends scored a run in the third inning when Kenny Diekroeger singled, stole second and came home on a base hit by Raul Mondesi.

Lexington added two runs in the sixth inning. Mark Donato led off with a double, and moved to third on a single by Fred Ford. Both runners scored on a double to left field by Michael Antonio.

The Legends scored their final run in the seventh. Terrence Gore, who had three hits in the game, led off with a single. Raul Mondesi reached base when catched Kevin Plawecki bobbled his sacrifice bunt for an error. Gore scored on a base hit by Bubba Starling.

Mills improved his record to 2-2 with the win. His earned run average dropped to 1.32 for the season. Savannah starter Robert Gsellman (2-3) was the losing pitcher.

Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
