Hickory, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws (23-34) plated the first four runs of the game, but the Hickory Crawdads (32-25) scored the final 12 and took home the 12-4 victory, Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The loss marked the seventh in a row on the road for the BlueClaws.
The BlueClaws entered the bottom of the fourth inning with a 4-1 lead, but the league's best power hitting team responded with four runs on two blasts. With one out, Nomar Mazara singled in front of Ronald Guzman who followed with a two-run homer, his first, and pulled the 'Dads within one.
Three batters later it was Nick Vickerson with a two-run shot of his own that put Hickory in front 5-4. They added another pair of runs in the following frame and pulled ahead by three at 7-4.
The onslaught continued in the sixth against Jeb Stefan and the Lakewood squad. The first two hitters of the inning reached before Nick Williams singled to right. One run scored on the hit and the second on an errant throw from the right fielder Brian Pointer.
Ryan Rua followed with another two-run homer, the third of the night for Hickory, and upped the lead to 11-4. In the eighth it was Williams that hit, the fourth homer of the night, a solo shot, and capped off the scoring at 12-4.
Lakewood jumped on the board first, and put a three-run inning together, right off the bat. Roman Quinn led off the inning with an infield single, he stole second and Chace Numata drew a walk against Hickory's Ryan Bores.
With two on and no outs Brian Pointer hit a line drive, RBI single to right that scored Quinn and put the 'Claws in front first. Art Charles followed with an RBI ground out to the right side, and with two outs it was Larry Greene, Jr. with an RBI triple to left that capped off the scoring in the first.
The BlueClaws upped the lead to 4-0 with another run in the second when Carlos Tocci scored on a Bores wild pitch.
Hickory began to chip away at the deficit and scored a run on three hits against Jonathan Musser in the second. Ronald Guzman plated Ryan Rua with a single to make it 4-1, but Musser induced a 1-6-3 double play off the bat of Lewis Brinson to end the inning.
Bores (2-1) finished the first five frames on the mound and took home the win for the Crawdads. The righty allowed the four runs on seven hits; he walked two and struck out two. Cody Kendall, Joe Burns, and Keone Kela combined to keep the Blueclaws off the board over the final four innings.
Musser (1-2) couldn't throw past the fourth and left allowing five runs, all earned, on nine hits; he walked one and struck out two. Stefan was roughed up for six runs, three earned, on five hits; he walked two and struck out two. Geoff Broussard gave up the home run to Williams in the eighth for the only blemish on his line.
Deborah Heart and Lung Center Player of the Game: Nick Williams (HIC): 3-5, 2B, HR, 3RBI, 3R.
The Lakewood BlueClaws and Hickory Crawdads will square off in the finale of the three game series Thursday night at 7:00 pm from L.P. Frans Stadium. Lakewood will send RHP Shane Watson (3-5, 5.26) to the mound and he will face off against Hickory's LHP Andrew Faulkner (0-0, 2.95).
