Legends Avoid Sweep With 6-1 Win

Lexington Legends News Release
If the Lexington Legends had hit the ball all week like they did Wednesday, this could have been a very different series.
The Legends avoided a four-game sweep by the Savannah Sand Gnats by scoring six runs on eleven hits to win 6-1 in a day game at Applebee's Park.
Lexington broke out of a slump in which it scored only seven runs in the first three games of the series. It was helped along by Jordan Parraz, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Eric Taylor, Jhon Florentino and Drew Holder also had two hit days.
Sergio Severino (5-6) pitched brilliantly in his longest outing and just his fifth start of the season. He went 5 2/3 innings and gave up three hits while striking out four to earn the win. His previous longest appearance came June 1 in a relief effort against Asheville when he went 5 1/3 innings.
The Legends, who had led only one-half inning the entire series, took the lead for good in the third inning on a two-out surge. With the score tied 1-1, Brandon Caipen drew a one-out walk and was moved over by an Eric Taylor groundout. The next batter, Parraz, hit a single up the middle to score Caipen. Florentino hit a double to the wall in center field to bring Parraz home and make it 3-1.
Lexington tacked on another run in the fifth when, with Parraz on second base, Florentino hit a long fly ball to center field that went off of the glove of Joe Holden for an error. Parraz scored and Florentino ended up on second base.
The Legends sealed the final score in the eighth. Jimmy Van Ostrand led off with a double off the wall in right-center field. He advanced to third on a single by Holder, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ralphie Henriquez. Greg Buchanan reached on a fielder's choice and Nick Moresi, who replaced Brandon Caipen in the fifth, hit a double down the left-field line to score Buchanan from first and make it 6-1.
Santo Luis gave the Legends 2 1/3 quality innings of relief. Luis allowed only one runner to reach on an error by Florentino and struck out four Sand Gnats.
Kyle DeYoung pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the combined three-hitter.
Savannah scored its only run in the first inning when D.J. Wabick hit a two-out single past Severino to score Holden from second.
Lexington countered in the second inning. With Florentino on third base, Holder hit a slow grounder to shortstop Luis Rivera that Holder beat out for an RBI infield single.
The win completed the Legends' homestand. After a day off Thursday, they will travel to Delmarva for a four-game series with the Shorebirds. Game one begins Friday at 7:05 p.m.
