Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - After playing four straight series against Northern Division opponents, the Charleston RiverDogs will come home to entertain some familiar foes, the Augusta GreenJackets and the Columbus Catfish, August 17-23 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Both series will be filled with playoff implications, as the RiverDogs, GreenJackets and Catfish are in contention for the Southern Division second-half title.
As if the intensity of late-season baseball weren't enough, Riley Park will shower fans with gifts, entertainment and fun-filled promotions throughout the week.
The Augusta series begins August 17 with Friday Night Fireworks sponsored by Cricket Communications and The Drive at 100.5 FM. With a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, The Post and Courier will be on hand to present Charleston Hall of Fame Night. There will be a special pregame ceremony to induct the 1955 Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars, the 1990 Citadel College World Series baseball team, Anthony Jenkins (who played for that Citadel team) and Modie Risher, a legendary Burke High School coach who played in the Negro Leagues. For the last time this season, Sara Lee will provide a postgame bread distribution after fans watch a beautiful fireworks display over the banks of the Ashley River.
Saturday, August 18, is the Hilton's Mortuary Salute to Negro League Baseball with 1,000 replica jerseys from the New York Black Yankees given to the first 1,000 fans courtesy of Comcast and WCSC-TV5. With another 7:05 p.m. start, former Negro League players Clifford Layton, Larry La Grande and Robert Williams will be present for autographs and to sell memorabilia on the main concourse. Appropriately, the RiverDogs will also celebrate Larry Doby Passion for the Community Night to honor the first African-American to play in the American League. Doby, a Camden, S.C., native who also played professionally in the Negro Leagues, signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1947 just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Doby signed with baseball Hall of Famer Bill Veeck, the father of RiverDogs president Mike Veeck. After a Hall of Fame playing career that included seven All-Star Game appearances, Doby became the second African-American to manage a team, as he headed the Chicago White Sox beginning in 1978.
Sunday's game has a 4:05 p.m. start, but Family Sunday and Dog Day 3, presented by Charleston County Parks and Recreation and the Charleston IMAX theatre, will begin an hour before the game with pregame family catch on the field and pony rides. After the game, kids are welcome to run the bases and stick around for player autographs. Because it's Dog Day, fans are encouraged to bring their canine friends to watch the game, too.
On Monday, as Charleston sends the GreenJackets on their way beginning at 7:05 p.m., the RiverDogs will partner with the ASCEND Foundation to raise funds and awareness for cancer research in another Dogs with a Cause Night sponsored by WXTC Heaven.
Tuesday, August 21, is Two for Tuesday, Get Your Hands Off My Prada Bag! and Disability Awareness Night presented by Blue Moon, The CW and 96 WAVE. It is also the start of a three-game series with Columbus with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Fans get two-for-one pricing on general admission along with food and drink specials in the Ashley View Pub. The RiverDogs will conduct a pregame ceremony to honor exceptional parents of disabled children. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently worn pair of shoes or $5 to donate to the Save a Shoe Foundation for a chance to win a new Prada handbag courtesy of Saks Fifth Avenue. Proceeds from the donations will benefit My Sister's House, which provides safe shelter for victims of domestic violence.
Restless football fans should make it out to The Joe on Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. game that will celebrate the upcoming football season with the theme, Are You Ready for Some Football, Again?!, presented by Sunny 96.9 FM. Fans who wear their favorite football team's jersey will get $1 off admission, and those who arrive an hour early will get to participate in a pre-game football toss on the field. The RiverDogs will also host a Sack the AGMs competition in which assistant general managers Andy Lange and Jim Pfander will go head-to-head in a punt, pass and kick competition.
The RiverDogs conclude the homestand and the Columbus series with the celebration of Thirsty Thursday and PFL Night: "Did Someone Say 'Pillow Fight'?!" brought to you by Wild Wing Café and 95 SX. Reggae sensation Da Gullah Rootz will perform in Margaritaville before and after the 7:05 p.m. contest. The Canadian Pillow Fight League will be on hand for between-inning matches and a main event battle royal following the game. Feared female pillow fighter Lynn Somnia, the No. 1 contender to the PFL championship, will be among the competitors. As always on Thirsty Thursdays, Riley Park offers fans $1 drink specials in the Ashley View Pub.
The RiverDogs depart for Rome, Ga., following the homestand for a four-game series with the Braves. After a three-game set at Columbus, they'll return to The Joe August 31 to conclude the regular season with four more games against Rome.
