OMAHA – Lee Smith, Major League Baseball's all-time saves leader, will be the special guest for the Omaha Royals 4th annual Tribute to the Negro Leagues, set for Friday, June 11 at Rosenblatt Stadium. Smith will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the 7:05 p.m. Royals game against the Memphis Redbirds. For the game, which is presented by Coca-Cola, Cox Communications and KFAB, the Royals will be dressed in Kansas City Monarchs replica uniforms and the Redbirds will wear the uniform of the Homestead Greys.

The intimidating, 6'6" Smith racked up 478 saves during his 18-year big league career (1980-1997). He was a seven-time All-Star (1983, 1987, 1991-1995) and was the Rolaids Relief Man/Fireman of the Year three times (1991, 1992 and 1994). Smith pitched for the Cubs, Red Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Orioles, Angels, Reds and Expos. He compiled 30 or more saves in ten different seasons, including three consecutive 40-plus save totals from 1991-1993.

Smith, who now resides in Louisiana and is a roving pitching instructor for the San Francisco Giants, was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2nd round of the 1975 draft. In fact, Cubs scout and former Negro Leagues star Buck O'Neil was responsible for signing Smith.

O'Neil currently serves as Board Chairman of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) in Kansas City, Missouri. It is the world's only museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Negro Leagues. At the June 11 game, there will be a silent auction with all proceeds going to the NLBM. Fans will also be treated to fireworks following the contest.
