
Peter Bergeron Traded To Milwaukee

The Montreal Expos today acquired outfielder Jason Belcher and right-handed pitcher Jason Childers from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Peter Bergeron and a player to be named. Vice President and General Manager Omar Minaya made the announcement.
Belcher, who will report to Double-A Harrisburg of the Eastern League, is currently batting .289 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 47 games. Milwaukee's fifth-round selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Belcher posted his top season as a professional last season when he hit .320 with 23 doubles, five home runs and 54 RBI in 91 games for High Desert of the Single-A California League. The 22-year-old Belcher is a .301 career hitter with 76 doubles, 20 home runs and 168 RBI in 320 games or four-plus seasons as a pro.
Childers is 1-0 with an International League-leading 15 saves and a 1.26 ERA in 24 games for Triple-A Indianapolis. Rated by Baseball America as Milwaukee's No. 10 prospect entering the 2002 season, Childers is 39-39 with 29 saves and a 2.89 ERA in 235 career games, during which he has struck out 8.6 batters per 9.0 innings pitched. He will report to Edmonton of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.
