Published on June 7, 2004 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â Edmonton Trappers outfielder Ryan Church claims the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week award for games beginning on May 31st and continuing through June 6th, by hitting for a .471 average and driving in 10 runs in eight games. Memphis Redbirds starter Dan Haren wins Pitcher of the Week honors after winning two games while holding opponents to just one run in 14 innings-pitched.
Church, a native of Lompoc, California who played college baseball at the University of Nevada, began the week by going 4-for-6 with two home runs and three RBI in a 16-14 Trappers win over Las Vegas on June 1st. The next day, Church again had four hits, going 4-for-4 with another homer and two more runs batted in against the 51s. On June 3rd, the Montreal Expos prospect belted his fourth home run in three games with a 2-for-4 performance against Las Vegas in which he drove in two more runs. In his last eight contests, Church has compiled a batting average of .471, increasing his season average to .376, second in the Pacific Coast League. For the week, the outfielder scored nine runs while hitting for a slugging percentage of .941 with four doubles.
Fellow California native Dan Haren, who hails from West Covina, sparkled in his first start of the week on May 31st, holding Albuquerque to one run on seven hits through seven innings while striking out a season-high 11 batters. The former Pepperdine pitcher was even more stingy in his start against Iowa on June 5th, shutting out the Cubs on six hits through seven for his seventh victory of the season. Haren's 14 strikeouts in two starts increased his total for the season to a League-dominating 90, 31 more punch-outs than the next closest pitcher. The right-hander's 0.64 earned run average for the week also helped lower his season mark to 3.58, best among Memphis starters. The St. Louis Cardinals prospect has also shown great control, walking just one batter in his last 14 innings of work.
