
Shortstop Maicer Izturis placed on seven-day disabled list

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that shortstop Maicer Izturis has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. In addition first baseman Jorge Toca has been transferred to the club from Double-A Harrisburg and infielder Wes Carroll has been transferred from Single-A Brevard County. The Trappers have made a total of 32 transactions involving 22 players since May 4. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders, plus five players (right-hander Seung Song, right-hander Christian Parker, infielders Henry Mateo and Maicer Izturis and catcher Randy Knorr) on the disabled list.
Izturis, 23, is batting .347 (61-for-176) with two home runs and 20 RBI in 46 games with the Trappers this season. The native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela is currently fourth in the PCL in batting and second in on-base-percentage. He split the 2003 season between Double-A Akron, where he batted .280 (61-for-218) with one home run and 20 RBI in 53 games and Triple-A Buffalo, where he hit .262 (79-for-301) with two home runs and 29 RBI in 85 games. Izturis was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cleveland Indians on April 1, 1998. He was acquired by the Montreal Expos, along with outfielder Ryan Church, in exchange for left-handed pitcher Scott Stewart on January 5, 2004. His brother Cesar is the shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Toca, 29, is batting .338 (26-for-77) with one home run and 10 RBI in 24 games with the Trappers and did not appear in a game with Harrisburg after being transferred to the Senators on May 31. He began the season with the Aguascalientes Rieleros of the Mexican League, where he batted .339 (19-for-56) with five RBI in 16 games. The native of Villa Clara, Cuba spent most of the 2003 season with Triple-A Norfolk, the New York Mets top farm club. Toca was traded to the Pirates on August 22 and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the New York Mets on Sept. 7, 1998.
Carroll, 25, was batting .259 (48-for-185) with 18 RBI in 47 games with Brevard County at the time of the promotion. He split the 2003 season between Brevard County, where he batted .231 (78-for-338) with one home run and 36 RBI in 99 games and Harrisburg, where he hit .318 (7-for-22) with three RBI in seven games. Carroll was originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 37th round of the 2001 draft. He spent two seasons in the Phillies organization before having his contract purchased by the Expos on March 25, 2003. The Evansville, Indiana native is the brother of Montreal infielder Jamey Carroll.
The next Trapper home game will be on Thursday, June 10 when the club will take on the Las Vegas 51s. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
