Lead Lost in Sixth

Giving up two five-run innings the Calgary Vipers (28-21) were defeated 13-4 by the Edmonton Capitals (28-19) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Leading 3-2 in the sixth inning Calgary gave up five runs with two outs and would give up another five run frame in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. After losing their starting pitcher in the second inning Jorge Vasquez (1-1) came in and recorded the win with four innings while allowing only two hits and one run. Stephen Whalen (5-3) took the loss after a promising start turned sour in the sixth inning and in total gave up seven runs in six frames. With the loss the Vipers drop to a game back in third place in the North Division.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead when Wilver Perez walked, Jimmy Rohan singled, C.J. Ziegler walked to load the bases, and Drew Miller reached on a run batted in fielder's choice which scored two runs after a throwing error.

Edmonton tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth frame as with two outs Enrique Cruz singled, Brent Metheny doubled, and Tom Collaro drove in both with a base hit.

The Vipers took back the lead at 3-2 in the fifth when Perez walked, Rohan singled, and Perez scored when a double-play was bounced into.

The Capitals took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning as Matt Rogelstad singled, with two outs Metheny singled, Collaro walked to load the bases, Carlos Duncan drove in two with an infield single, Nick Valdez walked to again load the bases, and Mike Hrynio cleared the sacks with a three-run double for a 7-3 advantage.

Steve Brown added to the Edmonton lead in the seventh with a solo home run for a 7-4 score.

The scoring continued for the Capitals in the eighth frame when Valdez, Chad Blackwell, and Jamie McGraw all singled to load the bases, Brown drove in two with a base hit, and Cruz hit a three run homer for a 13-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth Calgary scratched across a run as J.J. Whetsel, Bryan Burke, and Rohan all singled for a 13-4 final.

The Vipers hit the road to Edmonton to take on the Capitals for a three-game series starting on Friday July 15th at 7:05.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Monday July 18th at 6:30 for a make-up game against the Edmonton Capitals where it will also be Staples Student School Supply Drive Night.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
