Laval Drops Moose, 3-1
February 23, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (25-24-3-2) fell 3-1 to the Laval Rocket (22-24-5-4) on Saturday afternoon at Place Bell. The game looked similar to last night's 3-0 Laval win early when the Rocket scored a first period shorthanded goal in the second straight game. At 2:35 of the first, Winnipeg's own Dale Weise kept the puck on a two-on-one and wristed it past Mikhail Berdin. The Moose weren't able to convert on the remaining man advantage, nor were the Rocket able to score on their first power play seven minutes later. Killing off that penalty seemed to jumpstart Manitoba, leading to Felix Girard burying an Alexis D'Aoust rebound at 12:42 of the first. After one period, the score was still tied while Laval lead in shots 8-7.
In the second it was Laval who got an early chance on the power play, but Berdin led the Moose PK unit making a big glove save on Jake Evans. A few minutes later, and back at even strength, Berdin made another huge stop, this time with his shoulder, on Michael Chaput. Charlie Lindgren wouldn't be outshone. With Manitoba up a man and less than eight minutes left in period two, Lindgren stretched out to make a sudden pad save off the best Moose chance of the frame when Jansen Harkins found Marko Dano backdoor. Manitoba outshot Laval 12-6 in period two but neither team could find a go ahead goal.
The Rocket found that goal early into the third when Alex Belzile knocked down a Berdin pass, which then bounced out front to Michael Chaput who beat the recovering goaltender at 2:27 of the final frame. Cameron Schilling came close to tying the game back up a few minutes later, when he found some room off the rush. His shot beat Lindgren, but couldn't beat the crossbar. Alex Kile put the Rocket up by two with 7:34 left in the game, speeding down the ice off a faceoff and beating Berdin. Manitoba had a few chances with the goalie pulled, the best was Logan Stanley on the backdoor, but Lindgren made another pad save. That was as close as the Moose could get, outshooting Laval 32-22, but losing 3-1.
