Hagerstown Suns News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The Hagerstown Suns (0-2) gave up a combined eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings en route to a 9-3 loss at the hands of the Lake County Captains (2-0) on Friday.
After falling behind 1-0 on a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Suns took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth off Captains starting pitcher TJ House. Left fielder Valerio Heredia and catcher Derek Norris both scored on a two-out single to right field by shortstop Steven Souza, giving Hagerstown the lead.
Unfortunately for Hagerstown, and Suns' starter Brad Peacock, the lead was short-lived, as the Captains came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 4-2 lead.
All three seventh inning runs came off reliever Austin Garrett (3-2), who took over for Peacock in the bottom of the sixth. Garrett was saddled with the loss, and Peacock did not factor in the decision. Peacock struck out eight and allowed just one hit, the homer in the fourth, in his five innings of work.
The Suns got to within one run in the top of the eighth inning, as centerfielder Charlie Fermaint singled home Norris, bringing the score to 4-3. Both Fermaint and Norris had three hits in the game, and the Suns as a team combined for 11 base hits. All 11 were singles.
The Captains put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning with five runs, four of them unearned, against reliever Chris Lugo. Lake County sent nine hitters to the plate in the eighth and recorded the five runs on two hits, two intentional walks, one unintentional walk and an error.
The Suns and Captains will play the third game of the five game series on Saturday at Classic Park in Eastlake, OH. Following the series, the Suns will return home for four games against the Kannapolis Intimidators starting on Tuesday, June 30th.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
