Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

The game seemed to take shape for the Kannapolis Intimidators, up 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning with Brandon Kloess on in relief. However, a two-run eighth propelled the visiting Augusta GreenJackets to a 4-3 win on Saturday night and a 2-1 start to their second half. The Intimidators fall to 1-2.

The GreenJackets took a 2-0 lead off Joe Serafin after an unearned run in the second and a solo home run in the third by Ryan Cavan. Serafin, looking for a team-high seventh win, went six innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run.

In the fifth off Andy Reichard, who worked extremely well to this point, the Intimidators had three straight singles with the bottom of their lineup as Jose Vargas scored on a Jake Oester single and Kevin Dubler scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two. Reichard also went six and allowed five hits and two runs.

In the seventh off Ryan Verdugo (4-1), Dubler led off with a single and with two outs, Rafael Vera doubled to right, easily scoring Dubler from second and the Intimidators took a 3-2.

Zach Piccola had thrown a clean inning of relief in the seventh and got the first out in the eighth before he allowed a double to Cavan. Intimidators manager then summoned closer Brandon Kloess in the eighth to attempt a five-out save. Kloess did not even get the first out before blowing the save. The first batter he faced, Nick Liles singled to tie the game and two more singles later the GreenJackets had the lead. Kloess (1-1) would wind up finishing the game.

In the ninth, Jose Castilla came on and faced the bottom third of the lineup and got them down in order for his third save of the season. The loss is the fourth this season after the Intimidators led going into the eighth.

Looking to get back to .500 in the second half, Andre Rienzo will pitch game four of the five-game series at 5:05 pm on Sunday and he will be opposed by Jeremy Toole.
