Suns outshine Crawdads

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns scored at least one run from the fifth inning on, rallying to defeat the Hickory Crawdads, 10-4, before 2,759 fans at Municipal Stadium on Saturday night.

The Crawdads (41-32) got on the board first, against Suns starter LHP Graham Hicks (1-0, 5.40 ERA), with a run in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by 3B Matt West and C Zach Zaneski. Hickory doubled that lead in the fifth. After LF Joe Bonadonna kept the inning alive with a two-out double to left, CF Cody Podraza followed with an RBI single to left field to stake the 'Dads a 2-0 lead.

Hagerstown (38-35) tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning against Crawdads starter LHP Robbie Ross (8-6, 2.32 ERA). 3B Justino Cuevas led the inning off with a walk and 2B Jeff Kobernus reached on an infield single to short. With SS Francisco Soriano at the plate, Zaneski picked off Cuevas at second from behind the dish for the first out of the inning. Soriano proceeded to belt the game-tying home run later in the at-bat, tying the score at two.

The Suns jumped out in front in the sixth and never looked back. After scoring two in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead, Hagerstown tacked on five more in the seventh, including three on Cuevas' bases-loaded double, to increase their lead to 9-2.

After Hagerstown added an insurance run in the eighth to push to a 10-2 advantage, the 'Dads began their comeback attempt in the top of the ninth. With one out in the inning, 1B Mike Ortiz walked and SS Edwin Garcia singled to put runners at first and second for Bonadonna. Bonadonna proceeded to launch a two-out, two-run double to left to account for Hickory's final two runs in the Suns 10-4 win.

Ortiz extended his current hitting streak to 10-games with a single in the sixth inning for the 'Dads.

Ross took the loss for the Crawdads, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings. RHP Kyle Ocampo then surrendered five runs (one earned) on four hits in one inning before RHP Hector Nelo gave up a run on two hits with a strikeout over the final 1.1 innings. Hicks recorded the win for Hagerstown, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in six innings.
