Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
KINSTON, NC - Kinston used a pair of home runs, both with a man on, in their final three innings to take the first game of a four-game series against the Pelicans. Tonight's loss is the second straight game that the Pelicans squandered a late lead.
The Pelicans loaded the bases and took the lead in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Cole Miles and Freddie Freeman and a walk to Jason Heyward. With the bases loaded and one out, Cody Johnson drove home Miles with a sacrifice fly to give the Pelicans the lead, which they held until the second.
Ryan Blair walked to open the second and came home a batter later on Ronald Rivas' double to even the game at one.
That was the only run Pelican starter Brandon Beachy would allow over his three innings. He surrendered just two hits in his first professional start, but didn't figure into the decision.
The Pelicans broke the one-all tie in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Freeman knocked in C.J. Lee and Miles scored a batter later on a sac fly from Heyward to put the Pelicans up 3-1.
Two innings later, Kinston took the lead for good with an eventful four-run sixth. Cord Phelps doubled and Lonnie Chisenhall tripled, both off reliever Mikey Mehlich, to start the inning, and both scored to tie the game. Phelps crossed home on a sac fly by Ole Sheldon and a two-out single by Rivas plated Chisenhall. Following the single, Lucas Montero homered down the right field line which sparked an argument that led to the ejection of Pelicans manager Rocket Wheeler and, eventually, short stop Robert Marcial.
Kinston starter, Eric Berger (6-5), was finished after allowing the three Pelican runs over six innings on eight hits. He walked and struck out two to earn the win.
After Myrtle Beach pulled within a run in the top of the eighth, Kinston added another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Adam Davis.
Dallas Cawiezell (8) retired the Pelicans in order to close out the game in the ninth to earn the save. Mehlich (1-3) was saddled with the loss allowing four runs in two and two-thirds innings.
The series continues tomorrow night as the Pelicans send right hander David Francis to the mound against fellow right hander Paolo Espino. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC.
