Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem poured on the offense late as the Dash rallied for eight runs over the final two innings to defeat Potomac 13-10 on Sunday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Third baseman Brent Morel smacked two home runs and tallied five RBI while catcher Logan Johnson registered a season-high four hits with two RBI to ignite the Dash attack.

Down 10-9 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Winston-Salem's rally began when center fielder Kent Gerst led off with a bunt single and advanced to third base on the play when Nationals Cole Kimball threw wildly to first base. It was one of five Potomac errors. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer followed with an RBI triple to tie the game at ten. A pair of walks loaded the bases and designated hitter Seth Loman with hit by a pitch to plate the go-ahead run. With two outs in the inning, Johnson lined a two-run single to finalize the scoring and secure the Dash victory.

Winston-Salem reliever Santo Luis (3-4) tossed an inning and allowed a run, but collected the win. Henry Mabee retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season. Kimball (3-4) surrendered four runs in an inning of work to take the loss for Potomac.

The Nationals capitalized on a Dash mistake to plate three runs off Justin Edwards in the top of the first inning. With two outs and Sean Rooney on first, Edwards picked the runner off first which initiated a rundown, but first baseman Jimmy Gallagher's throw sailed into center field and allowed Rooney to reach second base safely. Michael Burgess kept the inning going with an RBI single and Christian Marrero followed with a two-run home run to give Potomac a 3-0 lead.

Marrero, who also tallied two homers and five RBI, struck again in the third inning with a three-run shot that doubled the Nationals advantage to 6-0. Winston-Salem finally scored in the bottom of the third inning when first baseman Jimmy Gallagher reached on an error and Morel connected on a two-run blast to bring the Dash within 6-2.

Potomac continued with the long ball in the top of the fourth inning as Devin Ivany and Aaron Suess hit back-to-back solo shots to put the Nationals in front 8-2. Winston-Salem would not go quietly as Johnson and Gerst singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mollenhauer then lined a single to Boomer Whiting that bounced under the center fielder's glove and rolled all the way to the wall. Both runners came home and Mollenhauer was able to come all the way around to score on the error to trim the Dash deficit to 8-5.

After Danny Espinosa added an RBI sacrifice fly for Potomac, Morel blasted another home run, this time a three-run shot off Nationals reliever Adam Carr to bring the Dash within a run at 9-8. Later in the inning, designated hitter Seth Loman reached on a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at nine. Suess would put Potomac back on top 10-9 with an RBI double off Luis in the eighth inning.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision as Edwards allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings for the Dash, while Mandel tossed six innings and surrendered five runs (three earned) on seven hits.

These two teams continue their four-game series with game two on Monday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Levi Maxwell (2-8, 4.82) to the mound, while the Nationals will counter with RHP Brad Meyers (4-2, 1.67). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
