Lynchburg Tops Salem In Series Opener

Lynchburg defeated Salem 4-2 at Salem Memorial Ballpark Sunday night in the opener of a two-game series. The Hillcats and Red Sox will meet at 7:07 p.m. Monday before beginning a two-game series in Lynchburg on June 30.
Salem seized an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second. Anthony Rizzo led off the inning with a single off Lynchburg starter Matt McSwain. Tim Federowicz followed with a double in the left-field gap, which enabled Rizzo to reach third base. Rizzo scored on David Mailman's RBI groundout to put the Red Sox in front 1-0.
The Hillcats struck back in the top of the fourth. Chase d'Arnaud doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a groundout by Jose De Los Santos. Jordy Mercer drove in d'Arnaud with a double down the left-field line. Matt Hague followed with an RBI single that plated Mercer and gave the Cats a 2-1 edge.
Lynchburg added to its lead by playing small ball in the sixth. De Los Santos led off with a bunt single and advanced into scoring position by stealing his 31st base of the season in 35 attempts. De Los Santos reached third on Mercer's groundout to second base. Hague hit into a fielder's choice and De Los Santos slid home ahead of the throw from Salem second baseman Luis Segovia, which extended the lead to 3-1.
The Red Sox answered with a run in the bottom of the frame off Lynchburg reliever Paul Mildren. Federowicz laced a one-out double to left field and reached third base on a groundout by Mailman. Zach Borowiak delivered an RBI single that scored Federowicz and reduced Lynchburg's lead to 3-2.
The Cats tacked on an insurance run on Jordy Mercer's solo home run with two out in the eighth. Lynchburg relievers Harvey Garcia and R. J. Rodriguez combined to toss two scoreless innings and preserve the 4-2 win.
McSwain (7-3) limited the Red Sox to one run in five innings and earned his seventh win of the season. Bryan Price (0-3) took the loss for Salem. Rodriguez picked up his league-leading 15th save.
The Hillcats will take on the Red Sox at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Monday night. First pitch is slated for 7:07 p.m.
