
Late Run Topples Carolina

ZEBULON, NC - The Tennessee Smokies broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the eighth to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 in front of a crowd of 6,871 fans at Five County Stadium on Sunday night.
Tennessee (43-26) broke a scoreless game in the top of fifth when Tony Thomas homered off Carolina starter, James Avery and the Smokies took a 1-0 lead. That lead grew by a run in the sixth inning when Brandon Guyer doubled home Brett Jackson and after six the Mudcats were down by a run.
Carolina (28-39) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as Jake Kahaulelio led off the inning with a double and was brought home by Cody Puckett bringing the Mudcats to within a run. The game was tied when Puckett scored on a Chris McMurray single and the game was tied at two all.
The Smokies broke the tie in the eighth inning as Jackson and Guyer both singled off Ruben Medina (L 4-2), the Mudcats brought the infield in and Blake Lalli grounded out to short, but Jackson scored to give the Smokies the lead that they did not relinquish.
Carolina had a chance in the last of the ninth against Aaron Shaffer (S 2). Denis Phipps was hit in the back to begin the inning, however Puckett tried to bunt him to second base and bunted into a double play killing the Mudcat rally and giving the Smokies a 3-2 win.
The regular season wraps up tomorrow afternoon a 2:00 when Travis Webb (6-8, 4.94) goes for Carolina the Smokies send Craig Muschko (8-3, 3.84) to the hill.
