Pitchers' Duel Ends with Spring Homer

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Matt Spring launched a long home run to left field to break a scoreless tie in the tenth inning, and Matt Gorgen set the Biscuits (72-65) single-season record for saves in a thrilling 1-0 win over the Jacksonville Suns (80-59) on Sunday at the Baseball Grounds.

Spring's blast came off of Jeff Allison (6-11), the fourth Suns pitcher of the night. Each team had ample chances prior, with the Biscuits leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and the Suns doing the same in the fifth.

It was a night defined by pitching, with Alex Cobb and Southern League Pitcher of the Year Tom Koehler facing the minimum through the first four innings. Each would go six innings and take no-decisions. Cobb fanned ten, with Koehler striking out six and allowing only one single.

After Spring's tie-breaking homer, Gorgen (22) worked a perfect ninth to get the save, breaking Dale Thayer's 2007 mark of 21. Ryan Reid (3-3) took the victory, throwing 1.2 scoreless relief innings.

The Biscuits managed only five hits on the night, with nobody getting more than one.

The 1-0 game comes one night after an offensively-themed 9-8 Suns win.

Lefty David Newmann will be activated off the DL to start on the season's final day with the Suns countering with right-hander Jose Rosario. First pitch is set for 12:05.
