ZEBULON, N.C. - The Tennessee Smokies earned their second straight victory over the Carolina Mudcats, winning 3-2 on Sunday evening at Five County Stadium.

The win improves Tennessee to 7-1 this season in Zebulon, N.C., and the Smokies are a win closer to the best record in franchise history. The Smokies are 32 games over five-hundred in 2010, and with a win tomorrow can pass the 1978 and 1962 clubs for the top record in club history at 33 games over the five-hundred mark.

Starter Chris Archer went only two innings in his final tune-up before the playoffs. In his two innings, Archer gave up only two hits and two walks while also striking out a pair of Mudcats. Jeremy Papelbon took over in relief for Archer and pitched scoreless innings where he only allowed two hits.

Tony Thomas gave the Smokies their first lead in the top of the fifth with his solo homer to put Tennessee up 1-0. Brandon Guyer added to Tennessee's total an inning later with an RBI double that extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth.

The Mudcats scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at two. Tennessee came right back in the top of the eighth, as Blake Lalli drove in Brett Jackson on an RBI groundout to give the lead back to the Smokies at 3-2.

Tennessee's bullpen shut the Mudcats down for the rest of the night. James Leverton earned his first Southern League victory with his inning and a third, and Aaron Shafer collected his second save of the season by getting the final five outs.

The clubs will play the final game of the regular season tomorrow afternoon at Five County Stadium. Craig Muschko (8-3, 3.84 ERA) will get the start for Tennessee against Carolina's Travis Webb (6-9, 4.91 ERA). The game begins at 2:00 p.m., and fans can listen to the contest on the Smokies Radio Network.
