OMAHA â The Omaha Royals scored only one run Wednesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. The way Zack Greinke and D.J. Carrasco were pitching, it looked like that might be enough. However, Sacramento rallied for two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, as the River Cats evened the series at a win apiece with a 4-1 victory.
Omaha's lone run came in the second inning, on Jed Hansen's fifth home run of the season and fourth in as many games. Greinke blanked the River Cats over the first four innings. The highlight of the 20-year old right-hander's night came in the fourth, when he escaped a one-out, bases loaded jam by retiring former Husker first baseman Dan Johnson on a pop out to short and then struck out Nick Swisher, getting him looking at a 1-2 curve ball.
Carrasco continued the shutout with three scoreless innings of relief. He also managed to elude a River Cats rally in his last stanza, surrendering consecutive singles to Johnson and Swisher to begin the seventh, before setting down the next three batters.
But, Sacramento finally broke through in the eighth. Rudy Seanez took the mound to begin the inning. He plunked Mike Rouse with a 2-2 pitch and then uncorked a wild pitch. Mike Edwards drilled Seanez' next offering into left-center for an RBI double to tie the game. Graham Koonce singled to right, sending Edwards to third and Seanez to the showers. Former Royal Mike Rose lifted a sacrifice fly to left on Mike Venafro's first delivery, scoring Edwards with the go-ahead run.
In the ninth, Edwards belted a two-run homer off Jimmy Serrano to account for the final margin. Sacramento starter Steve Woodard (4-2) held the Royals to just five hits over seven-and-a-third innings to get the win. Neither Woodard, nor relievers Ron Flores or Justin Lehr issued a walk. Lehr pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.
David DeJesus, back in Omaha's lineup after being sent down by Kansas City, went 0-for-4 to snap his season-opening 14-game hitting streak in the PCL.
Game 3 of the series is Thursday at 12:05 p.m.: RH Mike Ziegler (0-1, 8.83) vs. LH Chris George (1-1, 1.93). The lunchtime special features half-price hamburgers, courtesy of Omaha Steaks and KPTM Fox 42. The pre-game show airs at 11:45 a.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
