Tucson's 6-Run 8th Fuels Comeback Victory

May 13, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

The Tucson Sidewinders came from behind yet again as they defeated the Oklahoma RedHawks 13-11. 8 of Tucson's 13 runs came in the 7th and 8th innings as they pounded out 17 hits, 10 of the extra-base variety. The win propelled Tucson to a 20-13 record, good for first in the Southern division. Tucson also become the first team in the PCL to reach the 20-win mark. Oklahoma dropped to 18-15, but still remains in first place in the East.

Reliever Chris Cervantes (1-0) picked up the win, as he was the pitcher of record as Tucson made their comeback. Cervantes pitched only 1 inning, allowing 1 run, earned on 2 hits. RHP Scott Service recorded his 6th save of the year by getting the final two outs in the 9th.

The real story of the game was the potent offensive surge of the Sidewinders. Every starter had at least one hit. 1B Steve Neal belted his 7th home run of the year and 6th in the last 7 games with a 2-run shot in the 7th. That was his lone hit, but it managed to extend his team leading 12-game hitting streak. CF Julio Ramirez had his second consecutive 4-hit game, with 2 of the hits coming as doubles. SS Jerry Gil hit his second homer of the year as he finished 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

The RedHawks didn't shy away from putting runs on the board either, as they plated 11 of their own. CF Gary Matthews Jr. hit his 6th bomb of the year and finished 2-4 with 3 runs scored. 3B David Newhan also went yard with his 4th after he replaced injured 3B Santiago Perez in the 6th. RF Jason Conti ended with 4 hits and 3 runs. LHP Mike Bacsik (2-1) took the loss as he gave up 5 ER on 5 hits in 1.1 innings; all 5 were in the 8th.

3,445 fans attended and the game lasted 3:10. Tomorrow's probables for the 6:30 p.m. start feature RHP Juan Dominguez (2-1, 3.21) for Oklahoma versus Tucson's RHP Edgar Gonzalez (1-3, 5.90).
