Late rally gives Fightins a Father's Day win

The Fightin Phils (33-33) and Altoona Curve (25-41) had to go to extra innings on Father's Day to find a series winner and the Fightins came out on top 7-5 in 10 innings. Jake Fox hit a RBI double to break the 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th inning followed by Anthony Phillips with a RBI single off reliever Matt Benedict. Seth Rosin (1-1) earned his first win of the season and Mike Nesseth earned his first save.

Altoona scored first as Jarek Cunningham hit a RBI single off Perci Garner in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give Altoona a 1-0 lead. Justin Howard led off the inning with a double but advanced to third base on an error by Aaron Altherr. He scored on the single from Cunningham. Matt Curry hit a two-out solo home run off Garner in the bottom of the 3rd inning to give Altoona a 2-0 lead.

Perci Garner helped out his own cause in the top of the 5th inning off Curve starter Joely Rodriguez. After a two-out single by Peter Lavin and Edgar Duran begin intentionally walked, Garner hit a two-run single to tie the game at 2-2. Lavin stole second and third base in the process while Duran stole second base.

Garner logged five innings in a no-decision effort as he walked six batters while giving up five hits with two runs and four strikeouts. Colton Murray pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings as he gave up one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Matt Hoffman made his Fightin Phils debut as he entered the game in the bottom of the 7th inning with one out and retired the next two batters. He allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the 8th inning to Justin Howard and was pulled for Nefi Ogando. After a sacrifice bunt from Jarek Cunningham and error by Ogando to throw out Cunningham, there would be runners on first and third. Junior Sosa with one out hit into a suicide squeeze to score Cunningham and give the Curve a 3-2 lead.

Anthony Phillips provided the big hit of the night to that point as he hit a two-out two run triple to score Aaron Altherr and Brock Stassi off reliever Emmanuel de Leon to give the Fightins a 4-3 lead. A wild pitch by de Leon allowed Phillips to score from third and give Reading a 5-3 lead.

Altoona tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning as Matt Curry and Justin Howard hit consecutive RBI singles off Seth Rosin to score Alen Hanson and Keon Broxton. Both runs were charged to Nefi Ogando who left the 9th inning with no outs recorded.

The Fightin Phils are back at America's Classic Ballpark on Tuesday evening as they welcome in the Akron RubberDucks for a three-game series. First pitch on Tuesday night will be at 7:05 pm.
