Big Hit Eludes B-Mets in 5-3 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - Binghamton went 1-for-16 with runners on base and fell to the Erie SeaWolves in the series finale, 5-3, on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets had a runner on base in eight of nine frames, but never grabbed the lead, snapping a six-game winning streak.

Eric Young Jr walked and scored a run in his third rehab game with the B-Mets. The outfielder went hitless in four trips to the plate.

The first run of the game crossed the plate in the top of the first inning. After Angel Cuan got the first two batters out, Devon Travis doubled. The next batter, Ramon Cabrera grounded to second, but Burgamy's throw to first was low and scooted away from Matt Clark. Travis scored all the way from first on the play for the 1-0 Erie lead.

Binghamton came right back in the bottom of first inning against Wilsen Palacios. Young walked to lead off and moved to second on a Burgamy single. Young moved to third on a Matt Reynolds fly out and scored on the sacrifice fly by Matt Clark to tie the game at one.

The SeaWolves wasted no time getting the advantage back. Francisco Martinez doubled to start the second inning. Aaron Westlake then singled to put Erie on top, once again, 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Dustin Lawley did his best to keep the game close. He smashed a 1-0 pitch over left field wall for his seventh home run of the season. The drive tied the game at two.

The tie was short lived as Erie scored in the next half inning to take the lead for good. After Travis worked a one-out walk, Ramon Cabrera hammered a pitch over the left-center field wall to make the score 4-2.

Both starters put up zeroes the rest of the way. The bullpen took over for Binghamton in the top of the seventh. T.J. Chism surrendered a one-out double to Dixon Machado. After Machado moved to third on a fly out, Jason Krizan blooped an RBI single to shallow left-center, kicking Erie's lead to three runs.

The B-Mets inched closer in the bottom of the seventh. With Slade Smith on the bump, Burgamy chopped a double. The next batter, Matt Reynolds, singled to bring him home and cut the deficit to two. It was the only hit with a runner in scoring position for the B-Mets on the night.

Binghamton had one last threat in the eighth, putting two aboard with one out. Jose Valdez took the reins on the mound and struck out Travis Taijeron. He shut the door by inducing Kyle Johnson to bounce into a fielder's choice. The righty returned with a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save.

Palacios (4-3) picked up the win, giving up just two runs in six innings. Cuan (2-4), gave up four runs (three earned) in six innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (38-31) enjoy an off day on Monday before opening a three-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM.
