
Late Rally Falls Short for Cougars

Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars dropped game one of a three-game home series with the Peoria Chiefs, 7-4, on a cold night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
In the top of the third, a lead-off walk and a single put runners on for Peoria. After a strikeout and groundout, the Chiefs had runners at second and third with two outs. Zach Kirtley hit a ground ball to first and Yoel Yanqui committed an error, scoring the first run. The next play, Yanqui committed another error on a ball that got between his legs, scoring two runs, making it 3-0 Chiefs. In the fifth inning, Kirtley doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Yariel Gonzalez. Dennis Ortega made it 5-0 with a solo homer in the sixth. Scott Hurst added to the Chiefs total with an RBI single in the same inning.
In the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Yoel Yanqui tripled down the right field line to cut the deficit to four runs. With runners at first and third an no one out, Ernie De La Trinidad hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4. However, the Cougars went 1-2-3 in the eighth and ninth.
Cougar starter Jhoan Duran (2-1) suffered the loss, allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Abraham Almonte allowed two runs in his one inning of work. Juan Torres yielded a run in his two innings. Jayson McKinley struck out the side in a scoreless ninth.
Evan Guillory (6-3) earned the win for the Chiefs. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out four. Levi MaVorhis allowed four hits and one walk and did not retire a batter in the seventh inning before being pulled. Bryan Dobzanski fired two scoreless innings. Kodi Whitley set down the side in order in the ninth.
The Cougars and Chiefs play the middle game of the three-game set on Wednesday night.
