West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Pitcher Elvin Rodriguez continued his excellent run as the West Michigan Whitecaps shut out the Great Lakes Loons by a score of 2-0 in front of a season-high 7,469 fans Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The right-hander was excellent in tossing five scoreless innings despite throwing 86 pitches but allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five as the Whitecaps snap their four-game losing streak in the victory and keep their record over the .500 mark at 29-28.
The 'Caps took an early 1-0 lead when Jordan Pearce plated Cole Peterson with an RBI-single in the first inning. The score remained until the fourth when outfielder Darwin Alvarado pushed across another run with a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Rodriguez tossed five scoreless innings to hold the Great Lakes offense at bay, and then enjoyed four scoreless frames from his bullpen. Clate Schmidt tossed three scoreless frames, and Will Vest pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his first save as a Whitecap to ensure the victory. In his last four games, Rodriguez is 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched while striking out 32 batters.
Rodriguez (4-2) earns his fourth win, while Loons pitcher Edwin Uceta (1-3) took his third loss after giving up two runs in five frames. The Whitecaps record improves back over .500 at 29-28 while the Loons fall to 19-37. Pearce led the way with two hits to lead the Whitecaps in the victory. The 'Caps are now 18-9 at home this season despite holding a road record of 11-19.
