Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio-The Lake County Captains scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Dayton Dragons 10-9 on Tuesday night. The game was the opener to a three-game series.
The Dragons took a 9-5 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning before Lake County rallied for a walk-off win. The Captains scored two in the eighth to make it 9-7 and batted against Dragons reliever John Ghyzel, the Midwest League saves leader, in the ninth. Ghyzel struck out the first batter in the inning but walked the next three to load the bases with one out. Cory Thompson replaced Ghyzel and threw a wild pitch to bring in one run and move the runners to second and third. Thompson got Jose Vicente on a foul pop to the first baseman for the second out, but Todd Isaacs followed with a single to short left-center field to bring in two runs and end the game. Dragons pitchers walked six batters over the last inning and two-thirds of the game including four who eventually scored.
Lake County scored three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. The Dragons responded with three in the third to tie the game. Mark Kolozsvary led off the Dayton third with a double to left field and Jose Garcia followed with a single to drive him in. Garcia eventually stole third and scored on the same play on a throwing error by the catcher. Jeter Downs delivered a base hit and advanced to third on a pair of Lake County errors before scoring on Hendrik Clementina's sacrifice fly to tie the game, 3-3.
The Dragons took the lead briefly in the fourth when Miles Gordon doubled, stole third, and scored on Garcia's sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. But Lake County answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump back in front, 5-4.
The Dragons enjoyed a big fifth inning as they took advantage of wildness by two different Lake County pitchers. John Sansone doubled with two outs before Captains pitcher Skylar Arias walked the next three to force in the tying run. Jordan Scheftz replaced Arias and hit Garcia with a pitch to give the Dragons a 6-5 lead. Scheftz then uncorked three straight wild pitches to clear the bases as the Dragons extended their lead to 9-5.
Lake County scored two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Vicente to make it 9-7. After the home run, the Captains loaded the bases with one out before Dragons reliever Ryan Nutof got a ground ball double play to end the inning.
The Dragons collected six hits. Gordon had two hits, both doubles. Kolozsvary had a double and three walks.
The Dragons fell to 29-27 on the year. Their road record dropped to 7-17 compared to 22-10 at home.
